Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on the evening of Friday, January 12 met with South Africa’s Vice President, who is also African National Congress (ANC) leader, Cyril Ramaphosa at a dinner on the eve of the party’s birthday celebration.

Speaking during the dinner, the ANC leader said Kenyatta’s visit to South Africa discloses the special relations between the two nations.

“President Kenyatta’s presence here goes a long away in proving that we have a very special relationship with Kenya,” he said.

In a statement, Ramaphosa, a former trade unionist and a wealthy businessman, acknowledged President Kenyatta for winning last year’s election. He explained that the opposition party, ANC and Jubilee party would work closely to cement and strengthen the relations between citizens of the two countries.

“We also welcome members of Jubilee party that have traveled with you. Their presence have extended good and warm relations between ANC and Jubilee party,” Ramaphosa said.

The SA vice president’s praises on President Uhuru Kenyatta has raised eyebrows since the ANC leader has been a close ally of Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Odinga’s close relationship with Ramaphosa came to the limelight after the 2007/08 post-election violence when the South African leader was proposed to mediate the Kenyan logjam.

After he took over ANC leadership, Odinga said the win by Mr. Ramaphosa, who he considered a personal friend, signals a new era of democracy in Africa. Odinga stated that he would reinstate the dignity enjoyed by South Africa which had taken a nose dive following numerous corruption scandals involving President Zuma.

“The news of our comrade Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as the leader of the African National Congress will thrill democrats in South Africa, across Africa and indeed throughout the world,” Odinga said in a statement

President Kenyatta is expected to give an important address on Pan Africanism and the role of political parties in promoting democracy in Africa during the celebrations marking 106 years of the ANC.

Jubilee party leaders that accompanied President Kenyatta were: Vice-Chairman David Murathe, Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed and Principal Secretary Monica Juma.
