According to authorities, at least 20 people have been died in a nightclub in the South African city of East London.
Early on Sunday, bodies were discovered in the Enyobeni Tavern. Multiple injuries were also reported.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation as we speak,”A police spokesperson informed the news station Newzroom Africa. “We do not want to make any speculations at this stage,” Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said.
In the province of the Eastern Cape, a sizable number of emergency service personnel were present.
According to accounts, the victims’ relatives have not been able to see their remains, and the neighborhood has demanded that the venue be shut down.
Nomthetheleli Lilian Mene, the Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, told SABC News that “there was an alleged stampede inside the tavern”.
Details are still developing, and the BBC has been unable to confirm this. According to SABC, four persons were rushed to the hospital.
The majority of those found deceased, according to Brigadier Kinana, were young individuals between the ages of 18 and 20.
Bodies were lying inside the venue as if they had collapsed on the floor. An eye witnesses told the Daily Dispatch newspaper.
The remains were transported to various neighboring morgues, a representative for the Eastern Cape’s health department told News24.
Siyanda Manana added: “We are going to conduct autopsies as soon as possible to establish the probable cause of death.”
Bheki Cele, South Africa’s Minister of Police, and a second team of investigators were en route to the Eastern Cape, according to the province’s premier Oscar Mabuyane.
“We can’t believe it… Young people who were not sick, young people who should be with their families enjoying their winter holidays – they just have lost their lives like that,” he added.
