Michelle reveals boyfriends she had before Obama, details of her first kiss ever

Published

on

In her new memoir, Becoming, Michelle Obama not only talks about her public role and her family but also delves into her love life revealing, for instance, the first time she had a kiss as a teenager.

“I arranged my first kiss, in fact, over the phone,” she writes.

“It was with a boy named Ronnell. Ronnell didn’t go to my school or live in my immediate neighbourhood, but he sang in the Chicago Children’s Choir.”

At the time, Michelle would observe how other girls her age were changing due to the onset of adolescence and how the rush of hormones made her accompany her friends to watch boys play. To increase her chances of being noticed, she would often tag one of her popular friends along.

“Being around boys, I was slowly coming to realise, was fun,” she writes in the book that comes out this week and for which she and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, were paid a joint advance fee of $65 million (Sh6.5 billion).

In her gap year, she worked in a bookbindery, where she met another prospective boyfriend, David.

And when it was time for her to join Princeton University, David and her father drove her all the way to the campus.

However, she says that even by then, she had made up her mind to move on.

“David was easy-going and also more of an adult than any boyfriend I’d had. He sat on the couch and watched ball games with my father. He joked around with Craig and made polite conversations with my mom… We fooled around and smoked pot in his car…”

MEETING OBAMA

Once in Princeton, a new vista opened up for Michelle and, in time, she met another boyfriend, Kevin, a football player but it did not work out.

He eventually became a doctor and married a college mate of Michelle’s.

She, too, graduated with a law degree and joined a prestigious law firm in Chicago, Sidley & Austin, and that was where one of the senior partners asked her if she would be willing to mentor one of the young lawyers, known as summer associates, that the company was grooming.

“Of course you will,” she writes. “You have yet to understand the altering force of a simple yes … Next to your name is another name, that of some hotshot law student who’s busy climbing his own ladder. Like you, he’s black and from Harvard. Other than that, you know nothing — just the name, and it’s an odd one.”

And that is how she met Barack Obama, the son of a Kenyan student.

Obama would later become the 44th US President before handing over power to Donald Trump.

Michelle has made it clear that there is no love lost between her and President Trump.

I’m just different not cultish, Esther Arunga’s ex-pastor now says

Published

on

When Joseph Hellon Onyango holds a saxophone, women shiver; or at least that is what he says they tell him when they attend his performances. When he plays the sax or the flute, what emerges is a vibration of sounds that he has now purposed into what he refers to as “his call.”

He calls his music godly, and is quick to add that he does not believe in what people classify as gospel music. For him, as long as music has a positive message and lifts people’s spirit, then it is right by God.

Hellon is a preacher. A different one. He believes a pair of coloured jeans and curls like the ones on his head have nothing to do with winning souls.

His church, the one that landed former television star Esther Arunga into controversy, is up and standing. He says the service is held every Sunday at Kenya School of Law and he has more than 300 members.

Back then, the church was called Finger of God, a name Hellon says he chose after carefully reading the bible.

“Finger of God is holy spirit. The Law of Moses was written by the finger of God. There is nothing dirty about that name as Kenyans were suggesting,” he says.He says when his church was at the centre of bad Press in 2010, around the time when Esther Arunga had resigned from her job to be fully involved in church and become a politician, he contemplated changing the name.

In March this year, the church changed name to Kingdom Embassy International. He in partnership with an American preacher, run other churches globally.“When I was facing the devil in 2010, my church was alone. I realised the importance of partnerships. I imagine things would have been different if I had support,” he says.Hellon has mastered the bible.

He says he has read Genesis to Revelation, and in between, he has learnt to forgive people, including the media who called his church a cult.

Serious counselling

“There is nothing cultish about my church. I am controversial and I do things differently. Our messiah was controversial. Preachers who are not should ask themselves if they are really working for God,” he says, as he plays his golden sax at his Karen home in Nairobi.

On Thursday, a few hours after Arunga had been handed a 10-months suspended sentenced by an Australian court, social media erupted blaming Hellon for her woes.“I met Esther at a church event. I was a singer and she was emceeing. We talked and decided to do business together,” he says, explaining the start of a friendship that many believe ruined Arunga.

He says she also wanted serious counselling, a task he was ready for since he was a preacher. The jazz maestro says he was contracted to work for the Famous Tusker Project Fame show and he says when Quincy Timberlake, his former schoolmate at Kokuro Primary School in Migori saw him on TV, he reached out and they rekindled a friendship that has since been severed.

“He came to my church and he is the one who helped in registering the Placenta party where I was vying for president with Esther as my deputy,” says Hellon.

Their relationship, church activities and mannerism became an issue of public concern. It has been nine years since they made news, and his church put under police investigations. The case filed against the church was dismissed for lack of evidence. Hellon says he has grown even more.A faithful, identified only as Bullah says he has never met a man wiser than his spiritual leader Hellon.“When you talk to him, you realise he is different and he understands the bible better than most people,” he says.

Hellon’s wife Kuyu notes that no matter what was reported about her husband back then, nothing would have changed her mind from believing in him.“I knew there was nothing wrong with his church. If you know your husband, there is nothing that people say that can shake you,” she says.

When conversations about religion and people losing their all come up, as they often do when the saga surrounding Hellon and his church spring up, he believes someday God will descend, and it is then that people will realise his church was genuine. Until then, he waits. And while he does, he takes the deepest breath, and blows into his saxophone.

“They call me the maestro. That I am! Other things like cults are fragments of their imagination,” he says.

This is the new life of former TPF hottie Esther Nabaasa

Published

on

Her breakthrough was when she was signed by UG Records and during that time, being signed to a record label was a big plus for an artiste.

Esther Nabaasa had just won the second edition of the Tusker Project Fame (TPF). She was highly believed to be the next big thing after Juliana and Iryn Namubiru.

“I want my music to hit the international scene. I want to be marketable all over the world,” were her words soon after returning from Kenya where she had participated in the competition along with 18 other contestants.

But that did not happen. Nabaasa’s singing career lasted as long as her one-year record deal with Universal Music Group in South Africa.

QUIT MUSIC

There were stories that she had quit music after just a few songs such as Sing From the Nile, Yoga Yoga and Watwala Omutima Gwange.

Word then was that she was going to concentrate on her marriage to producer Michael Fingers. The couple have two children now and Nabaasa never completely quit music.

She settled for songwriting and she wrote some of the songs on Bebe Cool’s Go Mama album that was released in 2014 as well as Juliana’s Bits and Pieces.

Besides that, she also does music for commercials and last we heard is that she hit a jackpot writing one of the songs in Natasha Museveni Karugire’s 27 Gunsmovie.

Laura Walubengo: Leaving Capital FM after 12 years was so scaring

Published

on

Former Capital FM presenter Laura Walubengo is almost stepping into the fourth floor.

Walubengo recently took to social media to look back at her career before she turns 40 years saying that leaving Capital was one of the scariest moves she has ever taken.

“Moving from Capital to DStv was such a life changer for me. I grew so much and so quickly. My outlook, my ideas, my thought process, my dreams, the possibilities; everything just grew. It was so scary leaving Capital FM after 12.5yrs, and it wasn’t an active move but rather a door opening and I couldn’t peep – I was either in or out. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds. Even today! 6 days to 39” shared  Walubengo.

Movement

Walubengo left Capital in 2014 for South African firm MultiChoice as the Lead Digital Communications Specialist East Africa for DStv based in Kenya before she returned to Capital in 2017.

She left yet again in 2018, only after 7 months Laura called it quits again this time to join China Global Television Network (CGTN).
