BY KEVIN KOECH

Senators have requested West Pokot MCAs to impeach the deputy governor Nicholas Atudonyang, who has been working as a doctor in Texas since 2018.

The Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations Committee in a dire recommendation stated on Wednesday that impeachment would help solve the situation.

“We would like to request West Pokot county assembly to organize impeachment as a last resort to the pending problem, as expected by the law,” stated Moses Kajwang, the committee’s chairman.

The committee decided after over John Lonyangapuo wrote to the county assembly, and copied to Senate regarding working with an absentee deputy governor.

According to the committee, the only provision by the law is an impeachment of the deputy who has absconded duty for almost two years.

The Constitution clearly states the office of the deputy becomes vacant if he resigns in writing to the governor, die, or fails to appear for elections.

Additionally, it states that the office becomes vacant after the individual is arrested and jailed for 12 months or impeached by the county assembly.

Since he was sworn in, Atudonyang hasn’t been in the country. Close sources reveal that he practises medicine in the United States. He has however continued earning money from the public cash box as assistant governor

The deputy governor is a family medicine practitioner in Allen, Texas. Othe reports state that he works as a neurosurgeon, while others believe that he was sourcing medical equipment for West Pokot hospitals and working without pay.

Lonyangapuo last year defended his deputy before a senate committee saying he was away taking care of his premature baby, and he was also away on medical grounds.

At the same time, the Kajwang led committee wrote to Nairobi’s governor Mike Sonko regarding appointing a new deputy governor.

Lonyangapuo’s deputy last visited the country in December 2018, as explained by the West Pokot county boss to the Senate Investments Committee and County Public Accounts.

“The hustler nation is ready, even if the election is held tomorrow. Those who want to face us must also be ready. We don’t want them to keep selling us fear and intimidation. We want hopes and a vision for this country,” he said.

DP Ruto stated that his people were not scared of the ‘system’ or the godfather as they are united and prepared.

Earlier this week, Ruto’s allies from the Western region lead by Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa called out Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for using police officers to intimidate them and disrupt their public functions.

The DP’s allies claimed that police officers have been unfairly arresting politicians linked to him while leaving out those close to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has broken silence regarding the contentious issue of two-thirds gender rule in Kenya following Chief Justice David Maraga’s advice to him to dissolve the Parliament.

The CJ claimed that the Parliament had failed to enact the two-thirds gender rule, saying it had clearly disregarded the Kenyan 2010 Constitution.

However, the President refuted the claims and maintained that his government was fully focused on empowering women.

The Head of State was speaking while addressing the Military during the passing out parade for recruits at the Moi Barracks in Eldoret County, on Thursday, September 24.

Uhuru observed that several female soldiers had completed their training alongside their male counterparts, indicating that his administration is working to empower women.

A day ago, The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga advised the President to consult widely before making a decision on the dissolution of Parliament.

The Former Prime Minister acknowledged that the advisory placed the nation and Kenya’s citizens in an unstable constitutional and political state that calls for careful deliberation before any action was taken.

The President also lauded the Military for its discipline, which he stated had been demonstrated through its efforts to fight the deadly Covid-19 outbreak in barracks.

LSK President Nelson Havi said both Houses of Parliament would be operating illegally from October 21 following the Chief Justice’s advisory.
