Joey Muthengi: Depression over a cheating boyfriend made me suicidal

Published

on

Former Citizen TV anchor Joey Muthengi has spilled the beans on her struggle with depression that pushed her to being suicidal.

In a recent interview with ‘The Unwritten’, an online magazine, Joey revealed that she got depressed over a long time after she found that her white boyfriend had gotten married.

Joey narrated how she fell in love with her white boyfriend while they were in high school and everything was all good through the years until when she landed her job at Citizen TV in June 2016.

“The love of my life was a white man. I knew him since high school. We were perfect but the logistics around our lives just weren’t matching. We were always travelling on different time zones, different location and I was so keen on climbing the career ladder.

“And when I finally got to Citizen TV, when I was finally feeling like ‘I’ve sort of ‘made it’, I started looking for him again and then I found out he got married… through Facebook of all the places,” said Joey.

This threw her into depression and it was not easy to rally the support of her family

“I was quite depressed for a longtime. Even my family couldn’t understand and kept asking ‘what is it about this guy?” Joey added.

Last week, the Court of Appeal in Kenya granted gays and lesbians the freedom to register their own umbrella lobby.

In a judgment delivered on Friday, a majority decision of the Court of Appeal held that human beings should not be denied their fundamental rights because of how they choose to live their lives.

This position was taken by judges Philip Waki, Asike Makhandia and Martha Koome while affirming the decision of the High Court.

The birth of my first child took a toll on me emotionally and mentally-Lilian Muli

Published

on

When I was poached by Citizen TV in 2010, I had lost so much weight.

I weighed 56 kilos at the time after having my baby.

This, the Citizen TV journalist explained, was after the birth of her first born son, Josh.

I didn´t look nice by the way, but everyone was like how did you lose after having a baby?

What a lot of people didn´t know was that the birth of my first child took a toll on me emotionally and mentally.

Many might have been impressed by how fast she lost her baby weight which to ladies, is a major concern especially for good looks.

However, it wasn´t a result of something good that had happened.

So I went through an episode of post-natal depression so I couldn´t eat, I couldn´t function.

It was hard for me.

TV Queen, Lilian Muli actually hardly ate well and it took a toll on her.

The produce

However, all these had its good side.

¨Slim Possible¨ was born soon after.

When I finally got over that I got into that serious healthy eating program and I really watched how I ate and worked out religiously.

So when I walked into Citizen TV my boss was like ´Hold up, how old is your baby?´

And he asked ´How are you this tiny?´

So I told him about my depression and my deliberate decision to put on weight.

And then he said ´Okay fine, you are the person we have been looking for.´

And so…Slim possible was born.

´Slim Possible´ is a show on weight loss.

“I have not paid Xtian Dela to expose me so that he makes me popular. He is just doing his job. Stop spoiling my good name and that of Xtian Dela. This matter is serious and Kenyans deserve an answer,” Ringtone responded.
