Now fake gold boxes found at Barclays Bank

Additional safe deposit boxes and fake gold weighing 70kg were yesterday found at the Barclays Bank Queensway branch, Nairobi, raising fears that many fraudsters could have used the bank to defraud Kenyans of millions of shillings.

A team led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti yesterday camped at the bank for about three hours with the Barclays Bank of Kenya management and the Head of Security, George Maracha.

Kinoti and the Flying Squad boss Musa Yego visited the bank a day after four fraudsters and two bank officials were arrested and fake Sh2 billion found in a safe deposit box at the bank.

The main suspect and safe owner was brought back to the bank at around 4pm under tight escort and taken to a room where Kinoti, the bank officials and other detectives had a meeting.

Bomb disposal experts, led by one Munyoto, a Senior Superintendent of Police, were called in after an object resembling an explosive was found in the strong room.

However, the consignment was established to be fake gold that had been kept by the fraudsters, with the full knowledge of some bank officials.

Suspects identified

Investigations revealed that the main suspect, Erick Adede, and other fraudsters, were also dealing in fake gold after some was found in another safe box at the same bank.

Reports indicated a suspect, who was charged at a Makadara court for defrauding a foreigner, also kept some boxes at the branch. Following the arrests, DCI headquarters on Tuesday night revealed the identity of the suspects.

A foreigner who had been posing as an international investor was identified as Ahmed Shah while the two female suspects were named as Elizabeth Muthoni and Irene Wairimu Kimani.

Investigations revealed that the suspects were colluding with bank staff from the Queensway branch.  Last evening, the two staff members were released. The alleged complainant was also grilled for the second day.

Hours after the identity of the four suspects was revealed, a number of victims reported new cases to the police.  Two of them reported that they had been swindled of Sh5.8 million by the fraudsters.

The DCI boss said the complainants had recorded statements with the police after positively identifying the suspects.

Kinoti urged members of the public, who had fallen victim to the suspects, to report to police.

True identity

Kinoti also advised banks to enhance security and establish the true identity of customers and all items taken in for safekeeping.

This, he said, would ensure criminals, including terrorists, do not take advantage of such lapses and that banks are not used for money laundering and storing weapons or other dangerous stuff.

Reward Raila with presidency in 2022, Murathe asks Kenyans

Jubilee Party vice-chairperson David Murathe has asked Kenyans to prepare for Raila Odinga as president in 2022.

Murathe, a very close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, said it was time for Kenyans to reward the African Union envoy with the presidency for his struggle and fight for a democratic Kenya.

Speaking to KTN News on Saturday, August 8, the former Gatanga MP said 2022 would be a Nelson Mandela moment for the country as Raila would be a one-term transitional president.

He said the 75-year-old Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader will clear the way for a generational change in Kenya’s political order.

“We think it’s time Kenyans rewarded the years of struggle of Raila Amollo Odinga. They owe it to him. It’s like Mandela, and 2022 will be a Mandela moment.

“And we would also like to tell him (Raila) to be a transitional president who will then nurture the young generation to take over in 2027,” he said.

According to the vocal politician from the Mt Kenya region, there shall be a poster during 2022 campaigns which will have a portrait of the handshake partners.

“Assuming we go by the formation unveiled at Bomas, we will probably have a prime minister coming from Mt. Kenya.
