Why KOT focussed on this woman paraded by DCI over fake money

Published

on

Six people were arrested on Tuesday evening by detectives attached to the DCI in connection with fake currency amounting to slightly over Sh2 billion but Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) singled out one of the ladies for a peculiar reason, her age.

Irene Wairimu Kimani was one of the suspects who was paraded and a closer look at her personal details revealed that she was born in 1980 but KOT were far from convinced.

Many netizens ‘estimated’ her age to be slightly higher and asked police to also look into the matter ‘keenly’.

Those who were born in 1980 tafadhali…does this look like your agemate?”

Hata ukificha miaka uzee wa Mwanamke huonekana kwa vidole na shingo. The rest you can hide.”

Thanks for posting their photos. Let’s do social media investigation on them.”

Others who were arrested in connection with the fake currency notes included; Dr Erick Adede – owner of the box, Ahmed Shah- fake investor, Elizabeth Muthoni, Boaz Ochich and Charles Manzi (bank officials).

Also held for statement recording is a witness who would have been conned.

The suspects were arrested by Flying Squad officers at Barclays Bank’s Queensway branch and the fake notes in 100-US-dollar denominations were found hidden in one of the bank’s safe boxes.

Why Uhuru loves the Barka Restaurant in Mombasa

Published

on

The Barka restaurant, a Swahili hotel serving mostly Coastal cuisine, has always been the place President Uhuru Kenyatta and other government VIPs go for lunch while in Mombasa.

It’s said to be his favorite.

On Thursday, Uhuru while in company of several government dignitaries arrived at the eatery and caught the hotel staffs and other guests without notice.

Hotel staffer Tiny Mzee said the abrupt visit forced the staff to request other guests in the VIP lounge to move to the common area and make room for the President.

On previous occasions, the hotel administration was notified in advance and given time to prepare.

The President’s protocol team would also arrive early and inspect the area and the food to be eaten by the head of state and his companions.

Why does the hotel attract VIPs?

The hotel in Old Town is a few metres from the Central police station and presumably the security of guests is guaranteed.

The hotel management says quality services and food has made them a preferred venue in the CBD area.

The management also said Barka is the only hotel where its guests, including the political class, are guaranteed privacy.

The eatery has three lounges, including a common lounge, a VIP lounge and a VVIP lounge.

“Our taste has never changed, our services have remained the same and we have always maintained a clean environment,” a manager said.

Barka is one of the few places serving the majority, not all, the Swahili dishes.

Though the hotel is famous for its biryani and pilau, visitors can have a taste of other dishes rarely found in restaurants.

Top Kenyan athlete runs away from doping testers

Published

on

A top Kenyan athlete ran away from anti-doping testers who had visited their training camp unannounced to take samples, a senior athletics authority official said, as the East African nation ramps up efforts to combat doping.

Kenya is famous for its long and middle-distance running prowess, but it has been caught up in a series of doping scandals over the last five years, a period over which around 60 of its athletes have been sanctioned for anti-doping violations.

A World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report in September 2018 said 138 Kenyan athletes tested positive from 2004 to August 2018.

Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya Executive Committee member, said a top athlete had escaped when anti-doping testers from the Athletics Integrity Unit visited their camp this week in Kapsabet, Nandi County in the country’s west.

“After testers introduced themselves and why they visited the camp, one athlete left as if to answer a call of nature only to jump through the window and over the fence,” Korir told Reuters by phone late on yesterday.

“They won’t escape from the tough measures put in place, however fast they run away and however long it takes.”

Korir declined to divulge more details and say whether or not the athlete being sought had won any international races.

“He is a fairly well known athlete,” he said when asked for more details.

In the latest doping related case, the AIU said on its website on Tuesday it had issued a charge against Kenyan middle distance athlete Alfred Kipketer for what it said were whereabouts failures.

The AIU did not give any more details on the case. Kipketer was not immediately reachable for comment.

Under anti-doping regulations, athletes have to inform testing authorities of their whereabouts for a one-hour window of every day and three failures — not being present at the said time — within 12 months leads to an automatic ban.

In 2016, WADA put Kenya on its Category A list of nations on watch for anti-doping violations.

Kenya plans to impose criminal penalties – including possible jail terms – on athletes caught doping, and was preparing new laws to deal with this, its sports minister said in December.

Last week, the AIU provisionally suspended Wilson Kipsang, Kenyan former marathon world record holder for failing to report his whereabouts and tampering with samples.

Kipsang’s handlers denied the case involved use of doping and tampering with the doping test.
