Family of four that perished in fire incident given emotional send-off

Published

on

Emotions ran high on Friday as a couple and their two sons who were burnt to death on Sunday, were buried in the same grave at their Murimanjoo village home, Kathera area in Meru county.

Family members, residents and church leaders eulogised Eric Guantai, 41, his wife Caroline Gakii, 36, together with their children Tony Mwenda, 12, and Christian Karani, six, as a model family who shone in their church, community and business participation.

The mourners were inconsolable as the four coffins were lowered into the same grave, just a few metres from where their bodies were burnt beyond recognition when their timber house caught fire on Sunday morning.

Tiny coffins bearing the remains of the two children were placed between those of their parents.

Leaders, led by Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu demanded answers from Kenya Power on the cause of the fire, saying that there had been frequent fires in the area.

Addressing mourners during the requiem mass at Taai Methodist church near Kagwampungu market, the Deputy Governor said they had been keenly following up the matter after the demise of the young family.

FIRE DISASTERS

“We are talking to Kenya Power since we have had frequent fire disasters here. We are also talking to the County Commissioner to intervene so that we can have speedy investigations to know what really happened. We don’t want the investigations delayed. We would like to establish if it was caused by an electric fault so that we pursue it from there,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by County Chief of Staff Gideon Kimathi and a host of Meru County Assembly MCAs.

Nkuene MCA Martin Koome Makasi called for fire engines to be placed in strategic towns and markets.

On the fateful day, fire broke out at 3:30am on Sunday and rescuers found the bodies huddled together in the parents’ bedroom in what appears as an attempt by them to rescue the children.

A family member, Mr Robert Mwirigi narrated to the media how they were woken up by screams but were unable to put out the fierce fire and only accessed the building while the fire had razed the building to the ground.

Nothing was salvaged in the inferno which lasted about 20 minutes.

The fire also partly burnt two vehicles and one was pushed away while it was about to explode.

“We tried to put it off using water but it was too fierce fuelled by the wind. By the time we retrieved them, they had died,” said Mr Mwirigi who is Mr Guantai’s cousin.

Grace Ekirapa: I’ve been unable to access DJ Mo since cheating scandal

Published

on

Grace Ekirapa, who hosts NTV’s gospel show Crossover 101, has revealed that she had not been in touch with her co-host DJ Mo since rumors he was cheating on his wife Size 8 rocked the internet a fortnight ago.

Ever since reports emerged that DJ Mo, real name Sammy Muraya, was cheating on his wife of seven years Size 8 causing a social media frenzy, the DJ was barred from co-hosting the show with Ekirapa and is thought to be busy trying to glue his marriage together.

Weighing in on the scandal rocking the marriage of her co-host, Ekirapa revealed that she had been trying unsuccessfully to reach out to DJ Mo.

“I haven’t spoken to him and to be honest. It’s been hard for me to get to him. My phone calls haven’t been going through, I know it’s been difficult for him and I think when he is ready he will talk to me. Meanwhile the show has been going on without him but that’s the management’s decision.” Ekirapa revealed during an Interview with Radio Jambo.

She, however, felt DJ Mo should be given a second chance.

“What I will have to say is, when you get saved you won’t stop sinning, you can’t be perfect but there will be consequences. We make mistakes. DJ Mo is an amazing guy and if there’s a chance of working with him again, I would love that.” She added.

The singer also delved into the rumors that once emerged that she was having an affair with DJ Mo, a married man.

“During the launch of Crossover is when the rumor started. We had done a couple of photo shoots on different days and most of the time his hands was on my shoulder or mine on his and so people got talking.” she explained.

Published

on

Motivational speaker-cum music manager Sam West has responded after his wife Vivianne hinted that they are going through marital problems.

According to a social media post by Vivianne, people always assume they are a perfect couple but they are not.

Speaking exclusively to Mpasho, Sam West said he hopes things will work out for them.

‘We just have a few domestic challenges but we are working on them. We juts need prayers.’

Asked if this is just clout chasing considering his wife just released a new jam, he responded

‘No it’s not kiki, it’s just a coincidence.’

Sam Was responding to the post below by his wife Vivianne

‘Today I want to be very candid.. nataka niongee wazi.. The world first met  when he decided to propose on the biggest TV show in the country.

I was shocked and this was unexpected for me.

I couldn’t say yes or no so I sat there in front of 40mill Kenyans hoping the world would swallow me but it didn’t, so I smiled.

First forward I have worked with Sam West and been his woman for 4 years.

So to get to the point this post is for you who understands that what society has labeled as marriage is one of the hardest things to exist in.

We are two humans who have learnt the hard way. We are friends and we will always care about one another. Our union has however taken a kick to the stomach.’

Vivianne added

‘ IG in-laws can attest to the fact that I haven’t posted Sam on my feed for the past one month or so.

We felt it would be important to share the truth that marriage can get difficult..

Social media couples have created illusions of perfect marriages which we feel are quite misleading.

To be honest we have ignored each other’s needs in our union . Expectations and control took over our relationship. We are in a tough space and to be honest we are hoping we will overcome the current challenge.

Hii sio Kiki. For those who love even one of us remember us in your prayers. May God’s will be done.

In the meantime ukipata unayemdhamini never take them for granted., #najua

Body of missing Maranda teacher recovered in River Nzoia

Published

on

The body of a teacher at Maranda High School who went missing two weeks ago has been found floating in River Nzoia.

The decomposed body of Kevin Otieno Ongoma was sighted by a resident of Sio Port at Bukoma area on Thursday evening.

The 33-year-old teacher went missing on October 10, 2020.

Siaya county police commander Mr Francis Kooli on Friday told the Nation the deceased’s family members positively identified the body following its discovery.

“Someone spotted a body in the river with similar clothes to the ones the teacher had when he went missing. The school was later informed about the discovery,” Kooli said.

The police commander said they suspect the teacher may have committed suicide.

“It is highly suspected that he might have committed suicide by throwing himself into the river but investigations will however establish what happened,” said Mr Kooli.

Suicide theory

But some family members have dismissed the suicide theory, claiming that the body of the deceased had injuries, an indication that the teacher could have been tortured, killed and dumped in the river.

They asked the police to conduct thorough investigations into the teacher’s death.

The Nation has established that the deceased will be buried on Monday, October 26 at his home village in Mbosie.

A teacher at Maranda High School, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Nation that a burial committee has already been formed at the school.

“We have been meeting to make burial arrangements, including contributing money towards the same ,” he said.

A police report seen earlier by the Nation indicates that the teacher, who headed the head biology department in the school, was last seen leaving the school while driving his car.

The vehicle was found the following day abandoned near River Nzoia in Ugunja Sub-county.

According to detectives investigating the matter, the teacher lived with his family within the school compound.

“He left the school quarters that morning and drove himself to an unknown destination,” said Mr Kooli.

His two mobile phones went off near the banks of river Nzoia where his vehicle was recovered.

Police said the body is being preserved at Ambira Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
