An eight-year-old girl drowned last Friday at a hotel in Diani, Kwale County, while attending a relative’s wedding. Shirleen Wanjiku, a Grade Two, had spent the night at Neptune Beach Hotel, having been part of the 140 guests booked on Thursday to attend the Friday wedding.

Rodah Wairimu, Shirleen’s mother and also a cousin to the bride, is yet to come to terms with the loss of her daughter.Ms Wairimu is presently nursing another seven-week-old daughter, Angelina.

When The Standard  tried to reach her, she was still too shocked to speak.

According to Charity Njoroge, the bride’s mother, Shirleen is thought to have left with other children to the hotel’s swimming pool at around 11am.Ms Njoroge said they were busy at the wedding when they were informed by hotel staff that an accident had happened at the swimming pool.

Gathered family

She gathered family members and they went to the pool. When they arrived, they met rescuers trying to resuscitate Shirleen.

She was later taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.“It was very unfortunate that the happy wedding party had to be plunged into mourning,” said Njoroge.

Lucy Kaguathi, another relative, said when they reached the swimming pool, Shirleen was unconscious. Rescuers were making frantic efforts to resuscitate her.“The hotel organised transport to the hospital. The girl was declared dead after a few minutes of meeting the doctors,” said Ms Kaguathi.

When The Standard visited the hotel on Sunday evening, police officers in a Land Rover were taking statements from staff and relatives who were still being accommodated there.

Unfortunate incident Vickram Korla, Director of the Neptune group of hotels, termed the incident unfortunate.

Mr Korla said staff tried to resuscitate the girl before calling an ambulance that took her to hospital. He said the hotel management had put up notices around swimming pools that warned guests not to swim unsupervised. The notices also state the depth of each section of the pool.

The incident was booked at Diani police Station under OB NO 42/26/10/2019.

REVEALED: How three teenage sisters were impregnated by a shamba boy – police

Police in Tana River county in Kenya are looking for a shamba boy  (gardener) who fled after allegedly  impregnating all three of his employer’s underage daughters at around the same period.

The girls said the man would often lure them to their farm where he would sexually defile them. One of the sisters confessed to sneaking into the gardener’s room at night.

“I did not know he was having affair with my sisters as well because we didn’t share that part of our lives with each other, as we didn’t trust each other with secrets,” one of the teenagers told Daily Nation.

The further divulged that the man would entice them with gifts such as money and clothes.

“He used to give me pocket money and would sometimes buy me clothes. He was so nice to me. I did not know he was doing the same to my sisters,” another girl said.

Each of the three sisters gave birth to a set of twins at a Garissa hospital on Saturday through a Cesarean Section.

All the three are Class Eight learners and are expected to sit for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination in March next year.

On her part, the girls’ mother said she noticed her daughters had new sets of underpants but she did not suspect something was going on between them and the gardener.

“I noticed some funny set of underwear which caught my attention. But my last-born daughter kept saying she had bought them with her pocket money,” the mother explained.

“What I did not understand was why she chose that funny type of underwear,” she said.

She learned of the gardener’s affair with her daughters after she stumbled upon a message on one of the girls’ phone informing the man of the pregnancy.

She then discovered the two were planning to get rid of the pregnancy, prompting her to ambush all her daughters with a pregnancy test the following morning. Two of the girls admitted they were pregnant before the tests.

The shamba boy is said to have fled after learning that the three sisters were all pregnant with his children. Police are still looking for him.

The first-born daughter was expecting triplets but she could only deliver two children safely and without complications.

“They all had slim chances of survival, and that is why we looked for a specialist. But for the girl with the triplets to come out alive, we had to agree with the mother to choose between her daughter and the third infant,” a doctor said.

The three were discharged from the hospital following the operations and are recuperating at home.

The loss of a loved one is a feeling one can never put into words. But losing another person so close to your heart, becomes a tall order.

July 2020, BBC journalist, Angela Wanjiru wa Muriuki alias Ciru Muriuki lost her dad to COVID-19. A man she dearly honored, loved and cherished.

A man she still misses more than words can say; a man who would have turned 72 years on October 10, were he still alive.

Pain and agony that she wonders how long it will last.

Amid COVID-19 and strict health measures put in place, her dads send-off left a different mark in her life.

“Heh. Losing a father. Nothing prepares you for the pain. Nothing. I wonder if I’ll feel this agony forever. My father’s funeral was the worst experience of our lives.”

Remember, Ciru also contracted the virus and had to mourn her late dad in almost complete solitude.

I cannot think of anything worse,” she tweeted.

Another loss

It has been barely 4 months that the celebrated media personality was allowed to mourn her loss, and death has stricken once more.

Taking to her Twitter, the broadcast journalist mourned the loss of a beloved mother, a grand mum and an aunt – her fathers sister.

Messages of condolences continue to flow in from fellow personalities, friends and fans as they comfort a dear Ciru, having to bear 2 consecutive losses amid a pandemic.

May their souls rest in eternal peace!

Former Churchill Show comedian David Kangogo, famously known as David The Student, has tested positive for Covid-19 just days after he had an altercation with a Caucasian couple in the United States of America.

The comedian, through his Facebook page, said he started feeling unwell and also exhibited the symptoms associated with the deadly virus on Friday before going for a test which turned positive.

“I got diagnosed with Covid-19. Now I am quarantined and I trust and believe I’ll get through this. Thank you all for the support I’ve been receiving. Thank you! Please stay safe, wear a mask, wash your hands and social distance,” he wrote.

Hᴇʏ ɢᴜʏs!

Kangogo, who relocated to the US in search of greener pastures in 2018, has been working as a Lyft driver.

Last week the comedian was in the news after an angry Lyft passenger hurled racial slurs at him after he asked the Caucasian couple who had requested for a ride to put on a mask.

In a disturbing video, which has since gone viral after it was shared by Al Jazeera, shows a passenger identified only as “Joe” erupting after Kangogo asked him to put his mask back on after taking it off during the ride.

The clip shows the man getting out of the car and unleashing verbal abuse toward the former comedian as his female companion looks on.

Kongogo then urged the man to keep abusing him as he keeps recording the incident.

David The Student told the couple to “just put on” their masks, but he wasn’t having it and even threatened to urinate inside the car, the video shows.

Kangogo, 30, told Newsweek the man ignored his first request to put his mask back on after taking it off during the ride. The company’s policy requires all passengers and drivers to don masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said he called Lyft representatives following the incident and then went home.

“I couldn’t drive,” Kangogo told the outlet. “I was literally shaking.”

In a statement, Lyft confirmed the unidentified passenger had been permanently banned.

“There is no place for discrimination of any sort in the Lyft community, and this behavior is absolutely unacceptable,” the statement reads. “We have permanently removed the rider from the Lyft community and have been in touch with the driver to offer our support.”
