You risk going to jail if you’re found with plastic bottle without KRA Stamp

Published

By JUDITH GICOBI.

You risk prison or heavy fines if found selling bottled water, juices, energy drinks, soda and other non-alcoholic beverages without KRA stamp, manufactured or imported after January 31.

This comes after the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) gave notice on new excise duty being enforced on plastic. A move that will lead to the beverages being taxed by January 31.

If you have bottled water, juice, energy drink, soda or non-alcoholic drink it will be repossessed from Saturday if it does not have an excise duty stamp, which you risk prosecution for having it.

The three-month period given to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and the general public to comply with the new Excisable Goods Management System (EGMS) regulation will end on Friday, January 31.

“KRA reminds all licensed manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and general public that all bottled water, juices, energy drinks soda and other non-alcoholic beverages manufactured in or imported into Kenya from 13th November 2019 must be affixed with an Excise Stamp in compliance with Section 28 of Excise Duty Act 2015 and Legal Notice 53 of 30th March 2017 (Excisable Goods Management System Regulations) as earlier notified through a Public Notice issued on 28th October 2019,” said KRA in a notice.

All manufacturers and importers of bottled water, juices, energy drinks, soda and other non-alcoholic beverages have to give a full account of products manufactured or imported into Kenya before November 13, 2019.
