Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Monday maintained that the proper procurement procedure was followed in acquisition of his Sh19 million official car.

The governor, through Press Unit director Aloice Ager, also denied receiving official communication from any investigative agency stopping use the vehicle.

His statement followed concerns by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) about release and continuous use of the vehicle which is the subject of an investigation.

But even as the car in question became a subject of discussion in the social media, Ksnmedia.com sought to establish the real cost of such a car.

In the US, the most expensive Toyota Land Cruiser VXR csts about Sh8Million. So, where did the said figure of 19M come from unless the duty was more than the cost of the car?

Here is a 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR.

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR costs about $85,315.

Standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping heated steering wheel, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and a cooled center console.

The Land Cruiser also features heated outside mirrors, a power liftgate, a moonroof, a roof rack, running boards, front and rear tow hooks, multiple skid plates, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor, which is a set of cameras underneath the SUV.

NO PROHIBITION

Mr Ager said the governor is not breaking any law by using the vehicle.

“The car has been duly registered by the county and we have no knowledge of any prohibition by the EACC against its use,” he said.

When the governor was away in Qatar, his wife Dorothy Nyong’o used the vehicle to inspect government projects.

Mr Ager added that the commission is free to raise queries about their vehicles, including those parked at the county’s Works yard.

He noted, however, that this would not amount to a prohibition against use of the cars.

“The EACC has not impounded any of the county’s assets and put them under investigation. What is being investigated is the procurement process. That doesn’t stop the county from using the vehicle.”

SETBACK

The Toyota Land Cruiser VXR was released from the yard and has been seen on the roads despite the probe on allegations of procurement flaws.

The EACC said the release was a setback in the investigation and one of the challenges affecting prosecution.

Mr Ager noted that the county would not have allowed any use of the car had there not been thorough checks.

He said clearance was given by agencies involved in valuing, insuring and checking its suitability, which included the Ministry of Public Works, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

“The procurement process is from advertising to delivery of an item. Somebody must have looked at and found that all the parameters were met for it to be cleared for payment,” he said.

He told the EACC to stop creating the impression that the vehicle is under a probe.

EACC’S COMMENTS

Mr Aura Chibole, the EACC’s Western Region Deputy Manager, told the Nation that they were not aware the vehicle was no longer in the yard.

He said they would also investigate how this happened.

The probe led investigators to the port of Mombasa, where they looked into how the car got into the country.

Mr Chibole said their investigation was at the financial analysis stage and that once complete, the file would be forwarded to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji.

Former TV presenter Faith Muturi and husband George Ngugi are expecting their third child.

The mother of two shared the news on social media revealing her pregnancy which is at an advanced stage.

The baby, she said, is a miracle baby due to the fact that after having their second child doctors had told her that chances of her getting another one was almost nil.

“Some of you know our story, that 3 doctors… Not one, not two, but 3 competent and credible doctors we respect, told us on different occasions that our chances of getting a baby were extremely low. BUT GOD🙌🏾 Here we are, 3rd miracle December baby. He did it again. 🙏🏾 Jesus, you do all things well. Be praised, forever and always 💜,” wrote Faith Muturi on Instagram.

She said their third born child is due anytime in December.

The couple got married in 2013 in a colourful ceremony which was attended by the who-is-who in the entertainment industry.

Machakos Senator Boniface Mutinda Kabaka is admitted at the Nairobi Hospital after he allegedly fell ill while with a woman at an apartment in Nairobi’s Kilimani estate.

The lawmaker is reported to have checked in at the apartment along Elgeyo Marakwet Road in Kilimani on Thursday afternoon accompanied by a woman identified as Esther Muli, a resident of Wote town.

According to a police report on the incident, the matter was reported by the Senator’s wife who said that at around 3am she was informed by an employee at the Senator’s office that her husband had been admitted in the ICU.

“She went to the said Hospital accompanied by other family members among them her co-wife where she established that the Senator was brought by paramedics after falling sick while in an apartment along Elgeyo Marakwet Road within Kilimani,” reads the police report.

Police visited the scene and found the woman who disclosed that she was with the Senator in the apartment when he suddenly started complaining of severe headache and asked her to look for paracetamols.

She added that the pain worsened and she reportedly informed the management who called for an ambulance and rushed the lawmaker to Nairobi Hospital.

By Friday evening Senator Kabaka was still admitted in the ICU at Nairobi hospital. The woman was escorted to Kilimani Police Station for interrogations by the DCI.
