Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang and his deputy Yulita Cheruiyot on Monday said that they would be taking 30 per cent pay cut in March and April.

The money, they said, will be channelled to the newly established County Emergency Fund for fighting against the new coronavirus.

The county boss made the announcement after holding a meeting with his executives and County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka.

“The county leadership has agreed to take pay cuts for the months of March and April with myself and the Deputy Governor taking a 30 per cent cut; the county secretary, the county executive committee members and the chief officers will take a 25 per cent cut for the same period,” he said while addressing the press outside his office in Kapsabet.

The county, like others across the country, has been preparing for a possible Covid-19 outbreak by establishing isolation wards and buying necessary equipment to handle the disease.

So far, 16 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in the country, although none have been recorded in the devolved unit.

“The resultant amount will be channelled into the Emergency Fund Account to enable us procure additional and urgently needed medical supplies and items in response to the emergency at hand,” added the governor.

The county has been operating on almost dry coffers after the National Treasury denied it funds for failing to clear pending bills amounting to billions of shillings.

The governor, however, thanked the senior county workers for accepting to have their salaries slashed for the Fund.

He also praised Nandi MCAs for passing a by-law that enabled setting up of the Fund.

“We are grateful to the MCAs for approving the Nandi County Emergency Fund Act in record time last week. This paves the way for the county to seek funds which shall be managed from the Emergency Fund in order to adequately respond to emergencies,” he said.

The governor also ordered medical staff on study leave to report to work within 24 hours after their studies were put on hold by universities due to the coronavirus outbreak.

He also asked other health workers on leave to resume work immediately.

He added that residents yet to clear their water bills would not be disconnected.

“Users are however strongly advised to regularise their accounts with the company to avoid incurring huge penalties resulting from non-payment,” he added.

Mr Olaka said several bar owners had their licences cancelled yesterday after they were found ignoring a directive from the Health Ministry to close bars.

“The security officials will arrest bar owners found breaking rules which government has put in place. Matatu operators are also warned not to exploit passengers,” he said.

Pastor Victor Kanyari has broken his silence after his ex-wife Gospel singer Betty Bayo got engaged during her 33rd birthday last week on Wednesday.

Sharing the news with her fans on social media, the Eleventh Hour crooner posted a cutout picture of her fiancé on one knee putting the engagement ring on her finger with the caption, ‘Taken’.

Speaking to Word Is, the controversial pastor said he is aware that the mother of his two children got engaged but was shocked to learn that the man she is currently dating is a divorcee.

“I thought she was going to marry ‘Jesus’ after all the hateful things she said about me,” he said.

“He is a man who left his family, a wife and two children somewhere. She did not look for Jesus, tell her to marry a ‘Jesus’ kind of a man so she can surprise us not a man who has been used somewhere.”

Kanyari hopes that his children will be well taken care of.

“I have given my children the best life and I promise to take them to the best schools in America. Now that there is another man in her life, I hope he will be chipping in.”

Betty is now planning for a grand wedding and Pastor Kanyari said he is invited.

“I can’t attend her wedding although I am invited. She should continue with her life.”

“I came before him and at least opened some way for him. He can continue with where I left although there were others before me.”

Asked how well he knows Betty’s new bae, Pastor Kanyari referred to him as a broke man.

“He is from Central Kenya, but can’t compete with my level. He is a hungry man, that is the best way I can describe him. I can buy them lunch only that they have not shown up.”

He continued and said that instead of attending to the wedding, he will offer to pay for their honeymoon.

“Hii ni mbio ya farasi na punda. I do not know why she has rushed things since I did not expect her to be with that kind of a man. I expected a different kind of man. I am cuter…”

On the other side, Kanyari says Betty is still his friend and they call each other.

“She calls me anytime she is in a problem or is stressed. I wish her well and we shall meet at the end of all these.”

Pastor Kanyari says he has no hurry in moving on.

Word Is reached out to Betty Bayo who asked us to do a congratulatory story first, which we did.

She then declined to speak anything concerning her engagement.

“I am not ready to speak about it now.”

A woman has accused Nakuru Town MP Samuel Arama of assaulting her.

Amanda Chesiyna, daughter to former deputy commissioner for lands Elisha Chebii, reported the matter at Kaptembwo Police Station.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday when Chesiyna and Arama were involved in an altercation, which the woman recorded on a video clip shared on social media.

In the clip, Chesiyna is heard shouting as the MP tried to question her about a lorry she claimed was her father’s property illegally taken away.

She accuses the MP of intimidating her as she tried to seize the lorry with the help of two plainclothes officers. Arama denied the assault claims.
