A high school teacher who built his own coffin was discovered dead inside the coffin.
Joseph Gathogo, 46, was discovered dead in a rental home; it is believed that he died by suicide.
The Nyeri County-based instructor is thought to have put himself inside the casket before consuming a known poison.
Police were called when neighbors first informed his family that a bad stench was coming from a locked residence at the Ihururu shopping center.
More than a week had passed since the teacher from Muhoya Secondary School vanished.
The relatives went to his residence with the police there, but were welcomed by a bad odour and a closed door. When they broke in, they were shocked to see their relative’s lifeless body inside his makeshift coffin.
The search began after the family reported that Mr. Gathogo, who had a strange appearance, had been visiting their home in the area of Ngangarithi when he suddenly stopped.
His family told the police that although he had his own problems before his death, they never imagined he would die by suicide. Since then, police have started looking into the event.
As DCI investigators investigated the area, the deceased’s body was transported to the mortuary of Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
