Why Kenyan Athlete Michael Njenga Kunyuga was slapped with 8-year ban

Published

on

Michael Njenga Kunyuga, a Kenyan marathon runner, has been banned for eight years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for multiple doping offenses.

The ban will be backdated to August 1, 2022.

Three distinct offenses were found to have been committed by Kunyuga: using Nandrolone or Nandrolone precursors, possessing 19-norandrosterone, and interfering with the doping check procedure.

As a result of this choice, he has been eliminated from competition results as of May 15, 2022.

Kunyuga’s eight-year period of ineligibility, which will begin on August 1, 2022, has been confirmed by the AIU. His performance from May 15, 2022, onwards is void, and he will also lose all championships, medals, trophies, points, prizes, and appearance fees.

“On the basis that the Athlete is deemed to have admitted the Anti-Doping Rule Violations under
Rule 2.1 ADR, Rule 2.2 ADR and Rule 2.5 ADR and in accordance with Rule 10.2.1 ADR Rule
10.3.1 ADR, Rule 10.9.3(c) ADR, Rule 9 ADR and Rule 10.10 ADR, the AIU confirms by this
decision the following Consequences for a first Anti-Doping Rule Violation,” part of AIU ruling reads.

“A period of Ineligibility of eight (8) years commencing on 1 August 2022 (the date of
Provisional Suspension); and disqualification of the Athlete’s results since and including 15 May 2022, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points,
prizes and appearance money,” the ruled added.

Southern Bypass to be temporarily closed on Sunday

The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, which takes place at Uhuru Gardens and ends there this year, will cause the Nairobi Southern Bypass to be briefly blocked on Sunday.

The route between Ole Sereni interchange to Kikiyu town will be blocked from Saturday, October 28, 2023, at midnight until Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 2pm, according to a notice issued by the Kenya National Highway Authority (Kenha).

“Kenha wishes to notify the public of a temporary closure of Nairobi Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni interchange to Kikiyu town,” the authority said.

It was recommended that drivers make appropriate plans and take the alternate route via Mombasa Road (A8), which runs from Ole Sereni Interchange through Uhuru Highway and vice versa.

Runway users are advised to take the southern bypass, where the Nairobi Traffic Department will handle detours and road closures to maintain efficient traffic flow, according to National Traffic Commandant Mary Omari.

“To make this marathon a success, we have created a schedule of road closures and detours. These measures will redirect traffic between Saturday 11pm and Sunday 1:30pm. This might cause temporary inconveniences but bear in mind it will ensure the safety and success of this marathon,” she said.

According to the organisers, a total of 22,000 participants will grace the 20th edition of the annual race.
