A family in Huruma Estate, Nairobi, is in grief after their four-year-old kid died after falling from their home’s sixth storey.

Oscar Nabikhwa stumbled and fell to the ground while playing with other kids on the balcony of his family’s flat.

According to the police, on the evening of Monday, April 17, before going out with other kids, little Oscar had come home from school.

His mother, who was in the house at the time, told police she was told by other children that her son had fallen from the balcony.

“I rushed downstairs where I found him bleeding from the head after the fall. My neighbours helped me take him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” read part of the police report.

As part of the inquiry into the death, a post-mortem of the deceased is anticipated.

Although they called it an accident, they also said that an inquest had been started to get a verdict.

Adamson Bungei, the chief of the Nairobi police, asked parents to exercise caution and keep an eye on their kids because events were likely to occur while they were at home during the school vacations, which started this week.

He also urged building developers to include safety features to projects to protect the lives of those who are most at risk, particularly youngsters.

As part of the inquiry into the death, a post-mortem of the deceased is anticipated.

Although they called it an accident, they also said that an inquest had been started to get a verdict.

On Tuesday evening, a portion of a dormitory at Ebunangwe Boy’s Secondary School in Vihiga County caught fire.

Billy Maloba, a witness to the incident, estimates that the fire started at 8 o’clock.

“No one was injured in the accident since it happened when the students were doing their night preps in class,” he said.

Ebunangwe is a mixed boarding and day school.

The school has only one dormitory.

“It was raining around that time so it took a while for people to notice the fire,” Maloba, who said he lives a few metres from the school, said.

He claimed that once the fire was put out by the locals, the Vihiga fire department arrived.

Since property with an unknown value was destroyed, the cause of the fire has not yet been identified.

By the time of publication, the school still had not released a statement regarding the incident.
