The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has withdrawn Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s certificate to contest for the Mombasa governor position.
The electoral authority also prohibited the former governor of Nairobi from running for the position by citing the ruling handed down by the Supreme Court on Friday, July 15.
The High Court had previously approved Sonko to run for the position, clearing the path for IEBC approval.
“In adherence to the Supreme Court judgement you are, therefore, disqualified from holding any public office and thus disqualified from contesting and being elected as the governor of Mombasa or any other county.”
“Your candidature is invalidated and your certificate revoked,” the letter by IEBC Returning Office in Mombasa read in part.
