VIDEO: ‘Mwaki’ hit singer Sofiya Nzau narrates working as house help, hawker before fame

Sofiya Nzau’s ambition of becoming a global sensation comes true as her EDM-infused song “Mwaki” becomes a worldwide hit.
While Sofiya has been singing since she was a young child, she began writing songs professionally in 2020, she revealed during an interview on a local TV program.
She claimed at the time that she was working in Thika town as a house helper and hawker, among other menial tasks.
“I was a house help and a hawker before this. I worked as a hawker in Thika from 2015 to 2020. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I took a house help job before quitting in December 2020 then I started songwriting full-time,” Sofiya disclosed.
Her spouse, who doubles as her producer, urged her to pursue a career in music and promised to help her—but only if she writes Kikuyu songs.
Sofiya Nzau claimed that although the concept was completely new to her, she still had faith in her abilities, which is how the popular song Mwaki came to be.
“My husband said I would sound better if I sang in Kikuyu and since he is my producer, I had to do it. He later introduced me to songwriting. He has cultivated me in this industry and has taught me how to make money with music,” she stated.
Mwaki went from being a TikTok sound to being blasted out by DJs worldwide.
The song gained massive popularity after Brazilian music producer Zerb produced and remixed the song using Nzau’s vocals.
More than anything, Sofiya is ecstatic to see her dreams finally coming together. She said it still feels unreal as it happened so fast.

Suzanna encountered a woman who had been detained earlier that morning for selling illicit brew when she went inside the women’s cell.
Suzanna added that despite the situation, they grew close very soon.
Suzanna asked her to take a full photo, and despite her inebriation, the woman struggled but succeeded in capturing the moment.
Suzanna shared the greatest photo later, but she kept it.
“She seemed drunk to me but that aside. I requested her to take a full pic of me which she obliged but the lady couldn’t problem focus.. too much chang’aa in her head (sic),” the singer wrote.
Suzanna was in the cell when she heard noise outside, which indicated that male convicts who were being escorted to court had arrived.
To escape unwelcome attention from the passing male prisoners, she withdrew to a corner.
“I wasn’t worried because I knew I would come out soon due to the nature of my offence. I got charged, paid the fine, and proceeded with my journey to Kisumu,” Suzanna recounted.
However, one aspect that deeply troubled the music icon was the unhygienic conditions of the cell.
Expressing concern about its cleanliness, she said: “One thing that always bothered me was the way the cell was kept. Very dirty! Maybe things have changed now!!”
