Elections in these areas could be postponed, Chebukati warns

Elections in some regions where candidates are being sued may be postponed, according to Wafula Chebukati, chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking on Saturday, July 9, Chebukati stated that the commission was concerned due to the ongoing legal matters and the judiciary’s inability to provide guidance.

Chebukati issued a warning that his ruling might have an impact on 31 locations in the counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, and others.

He requested Chief Justice Martha Koome to hasten the cases’ resolution in order to prevent a holdup in the printing of the ballots papers.

“If for any reason they (court cases) are not finalized in good time, as a commission we cannot wait forever, we shall be forced to suspend elections in those areas where decisions affect the printing of ballot papers. We must deliver elections on August 9,” he stated.

Similar instructions were issued by IEBC commissioner Francis Wanderi on Monday, July 4, with the justification that the printing of the ballot paper by the Greek company Inform Lykos would not be delayed by the ex-Governor of Nairobi Mike Sonko’s ongoing appeal.

Sonko is looking for clearance to run in the Mombasa gubernatorial election after Chebukati disqualified him due to his impeachment. Wanderi said that they will go ahead and make the necessary preparations.

IEBC also stated that should the Greek firm run into unanticipated difficulties, a backup firm in Romania may step in.

However, it specified that Inform Lykos has adequate backup procedures in place to fulfill its contractual commitments.
