The news of a detained pastor and gospel singer, Paul Mathenge Wanderi, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Pastor Elizabeth Wanjiru’s death is still being investigated, so Wanderi will stay in prison until Friday, March 24. He is awaiting the outcome of his application to be released on bond.
A autopsy performed at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital (KUTRH) revealed that Wanjiru committed suicide by asphyxia, according to his attorney Ndegwa Njiru. To carry out a more thorough inquiry, Corporal Japhet Omutelema of the Kasarani DCI offices is requesting custodial orders.
In order to get to the Thika Superhighway, Mr. Wanderi informed the police that he had left Ms. Wanjiru inside his home in the Maziwa neighborhood of Kahawa West within the Kasarani Sub-county.
Later, he attempted calling her, but she didn’t answer, so he went back to the house where he says he discovered her unconscious, hanging from the frame of his wardrobe on a bedsheet.
After promising to free her of her ties, the suspect called his neighbors to help and rushed the woman to Jacaranda Maternity hospital, where she was later declared deceased.
Mr Wanderi later carried Ms Wanjiru’s body in his personal car to Kiamumbi police station, where he was referred and escorted to Kahawa west police station before taking the body to Kenyatta KUTRH Mortuary.
He was then summoned to the police station, where he was detained. Cpl. Omutelema is seeking custodial orders to conduct a postmortem, record statements comprehensively, and have pastor Wanderi undergo a mental assessment.
Mr. Njiru, who ruled out the chance of murder, informed the court that the postmortem procedure was observed by the detective, two impartial pathologists who represented Mr. Wanderi’s and Ms. Wanjiru’s families, and the deceased.
By arguing that Mr. Wanderi’s continued incarceration is unnecessary and restricts his freedom, attorney Ndegwa Njiru was successful in convincing the judge to release Mr. Wanderi.
Nothing, he claimed, could reverse the science findings that the suspect was not responsible for the deceased’s demise.
After reporting Ms. Wanjiru’s demise last weekend, Mr. Wanderi was detained.
In an affidavit, Cpl. Omutelela informed the court that Mr. Wanderi reported the occurrence on March 18.
