A police car that was pursuing a saloon car along the Uriri-Awendo route fatally injured a student.
An officer from Uriri Sub-County was operating a car along the highway when the collision that resulted in the death of a student and the injuries of four others occurred, according to a police report.
“He was driving the motor vehicle of registration number GKB401Z Isuzu D-Max Double Cabin towards Awendo general direction while chasing a saloon car which was believed to be ferrying cannabis sativa,” the statement reads in part.
The driver of the car, whose identity has not yet been determined, struck a police car before striking three pedestrians who were Lwala Mixed Day Secondary School pupils, according to the article.
The police car subsequently lost control and came to rest in a ditch. One of the pupils passed almost immediately, another had bruises on his face and both hands, and the third had a broken right leg in addition to bruising on his face and hands.
According to reports, the officer who was operating the police car sustained a deep forehead cut as well as a hip joint damage.
The deceased’s body was then transported to the morgue at the Migori County Referral Hospital for a postmortem.
Around 3 kilometers from the scene of the collision, the car’s driver attempted to flee the scene but instead abandoned the damaged vehicle. Authorities are currently looking to apprehend the evading mystery driver.
