The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has declared William Samoei Arap Ruto as Kenya’s duly elected fifth president.

On August 15, 2022, at 6:03 PM, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati made the announcement at the Bomas of Kenya.

He stated that Mr. Ruto had achieved the constitutional requirements after receiving 7,176,141 votes, or 50.49 percent of the total votes cast, and having won 25 percent of the required 39 counties.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party, received 6,942,930 votes, or 48% of the total votes cast.

“In accordance with the Constitution and the law, chairperson of IEBC hereby declare that Ruto William Samoei has been duly elected as the President of the Republic of Kenya under the provision of Article 138 of the Constitution of the Presidential election held on August 9, 2022,” said he said.

Mr. Chebukati gave Mr. Ruto the certificate of presidential results as his supporters erupted in applause.

He was accompanied by the designate First Lady, Rachel Ruto, and deputy president-elect Rigathi Gachagua.

Drama occurred before Mr. Ruto was announced the winner.

Azimi la Umoja Saitabao Ole Kanchuri, the chief agent for Raila Odinga, alleged that the mechanisms utilized by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to count the results of the presidential campaign were corrupted before the results were formally declared by the electoral body.
