Justina Wamae explains her belated congratulatory message to Ruto

By Judith Gicobi

Justina Wamae, the presidential running mate for the Roots Party, congratulated William Ruto on becoming the president-elect and the victor of the 2022 general election.

On Friday, August 19, Wamae said that it had taken her four days to examine the accusations leveled against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which was accused of holding a contentious election, and that she had come to the conclusion that they were unfounded.

“William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua are going to be our President and Deputy President respectively and I pray that our wonderful peaceful people of Kenya will accept the verdict. Congratulations Ruto and Rigathi on your victory,” Wamae congratulated the Kenya Kwanza leaders.

Notably, she said that she will support the next administration’s efforts to guarantee the nation’s financial security as a voice for the youth.

She also defended Wafula Chebukati, chair of the IEBC, for announcing the results despite tensions within the Commission. This came when four commissioners, led by vice chair Juliana Cherera, broke ranks and refused to accept responsibility for the outcomes.

“It has taken me four days listening to arguments from all quotas on whether IEBC was free, fair and transparent and I can confidently say that the election was transparent because the polling station agents, who are supreme in this process, would have raised an alarm if the Presiding officer was up to no good.”

Wamae joins David Mwaure Waihiga, the unsuccessful Agano Party candidate for president, who endorsed William Ruto as the new president. Ruto was dubbed “the anointed one” by Waihiga, who is a clergyman by profession.
