By Judith Gicobi

According to a top government official, Kenya exported roughly 39,000 labor migrants in 2021.

The majority of Kenyans found work in the Middle East, according to Simon Chelugui, cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The rest went to Europe and North America.

“We also hope to export over 39,000 labor migrants in 2022,” Chelugui stated at the National Industrial Training Authority’s graduation ceremony for Information Technology students (NITA).

Kenyans working abroad number at four million, according to the ministry of labor.

Chelugui pointed out that the majority of Kenyans working abroad are  semi-skilled or low-skilled.

“Our focus now is to ensure that we send mostly skilled workers in the medical engineering and hospitality fields in order to increase our Diaspora remittances,” he added.

He indicated that the government is putting an emphasis on export labor in an attempt to improve foreign exchange revenues from remittances sent home.
