Passengers using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train service will not be allowed to pay in cash to travel from next month, the Kenya Railways has announced.
In a notice on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, the State corporation said the train service christened Madaraka Express will go cashless from February 1.
Customers are encouraged to use MPesa or debit/credit cards as an alternative mode of payment at all Points of Service.
“We will no longer be accepting cash for the purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations,” the company said in a public notice.
This move towards a cashless system is expected to improve the efficiency and convenience of the ticketing process for customers, as well as enhance security and reduce the risk of fraud.
In the notice, the management of Kenya Railways expressed their appreciation for the continued support of their customers and assured them that the company is committed to providing a high-quality and reliable service.
Bookings can also be made using the USSD code *639# or the online ticketing system on the Kenya Railways website.
