Mary Waireri, a copywriter and screenwriter who was born in Kenya and raised in London, has been chosen to collaborate on the Exiles television series with the global narrative development team at Sony Pictures Television and Ebony Life.

Exiles was chosen for development by ALO, a platform created by Mo Abudu’s Ebony Life and Sony Pictures to support the storytelling and professional development of writers from Africa, giving Ms. Waireri the chance.

Exiles, a novel that was originally intended to be a feature-length film, centers on a British doctor with Kenyan ancestry who returns to the nation she fled as a child only to discover that her twin brother has vanished while looking into a cover-up by the government.

“As a lover of thriller, horror, and sci-fi, I’m interested in exploring the many dimensions of the African diaspora and diaspora experiences through a grounded genre lens. I’m excited to work with the teams at Sony Pictures Television and EbonyLife to bring Exiles to life,” Waireri said.
