A primary school student who had allegedly been trafficked to Tanzania to work as a farmhand has been saved by human rights advocates.
Officials from Taita-Taveta Human Rights Watch came to the aid of the Standard Seven pupil at Mwakingali Primary School.
According to Mr. Haji Mwakio, the chairman of the Taita-Taveta Rights Watch, they tracked down the youngster when he was working as a farmhand at Marerani in Arusha, Tanzania, after acting on a tip-off.
When the schools let out on January 22, he said the victim in Voi town vanished from her house and failed to return when classes resumed on January 23. This sparked a search.
“The boy is now back to school under the care of the children’s department. We thank the immigration officials from Kenya and Tanzania for assisting us,” he revealed.
The human rights activist noted human trafficking victims found in Taveta also include young girls lured by truck drivers into sexual relationships.
