On Friday, March 11, 2022, Deputy President William Ruto welcomed Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi back into his fold, months after the deputy county leader defected to Raila’s Azimio La Umoja.
Maangi, who was elected on an ODM platform, defected to the UDA before rejoining Raila’s party in December 2021. On August 9th, the deputy county chief will attempt to succeed his boss, James Ongwae.
“Karibu mheshimiwa Joash Maangi, Dr Andrew Maubi and Wakili Migos Ogamba to the Hustler Nation. You are joining the team that believes in Kenya kwanza and empowering ordinary people. Wishing you success in your bids for several seats in Kisii County,” stated Ruto
Ruto hosted Maangi and a number of other Gusii leaders at his official Karen house in Nairobi.
Maangi’s switch of affiliation coincides with the resignation of ex-UDA party National Treasurer Omingo Magara.
Several Gusii commanders have defected from Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp to join Raila’s Azimio La Umoja movement in recent weeks. Anthony Kibagendi, Ruto’s former Director of Youth Affairs, was among the renowned leaders who recently joined the Azimio camp.
