In Kirinyaga County’s Gichugu Constituency, Martha Karua, the running mate for the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya alliance, has cast her ballot.

A few minutes after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Ms. Karua cast her ballot at Mugumoini Primary School in Kimunye before urging Kenyans to exercise their democratic right in large numbers.

“I have voted, as you can see from the ink on my finger. Kindly, get out and vote. Today is our day to determine the direction this country takes, make your voice count,” she said.

Tuesday’s voting locations opened at six in the morning.

William Ruto, the deputy president of Kenya and a candidate for president of the Kenya Kwanza party, voted elsewhere in Uasin Gishu County at around 6:15 in the morning.

Four candidates have joined the presidential race: Raila Odinga of Azimio, Dr. Ruto of Kenya Kwanza, George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party, and David Mwaure of the Agano Party.
