On Friday, November 11, the Milimani Law Courts experienced light moment when a police officer accused of killing attorney Willie Kimani requested the presiding judge to instruct prison officials to adjust his diet.
Stephen Chebureti made a heartfelt petition for a special diet, claiming he was having trouble digesting the githeri served in prison.
Chebureti confessed to Justice Daniel Ogembo that he has been surviving at Industrial Area Prison solely on ugali.
He pleaded with the judge to instruct the jail staff to provide him milk, cabbage, and potatoes in addition to Ugali.
“Mimi nikiwa jela mwili yangu imekataa chakula kabisa. Chakula natumia tu ni ugali na hiyo ndio chakula yangu. Wakipika githeri sikuli. Naomba koti ipate kunisaidia nipate kupewa cabbage, viazi, ugali na maziwa,” Chebureti pleaded with the judge.
Following her promotion to the Court of Appeal, Justice Ogembo, who was holding a brief for Justice Jessie Lessit, ordered that the convict be brought before the clinical officer in charge of the correctional facility for a check-up about the nutrition issue.
