Sauti Sol’s band member Polycap Otieno also known as Fancy Fingers said seeing his dad do house chores at home and helping his mother shaped his thinking about what men should or should not do.
“This was something I had never seen in a house setting, I was like, ‘Oh this is actually right, this can happen,’ and it does not have to be as society says it happens,” he said.
He added that he helps his wife with house chores without feeling emasculated as a man.
He narrated that his dad was retrenched after working for a company for close to 14 years, which meant his mother had to step up and provide for the family while his dad stayed at home and searched for jobs.
“With that, I saw a different side of him as a man in general. I had not seen a man dive deep into doing household work,” he said. The popular singer narrated his dad would wash their shirts from school and make dinner for them because their mother would leave the house early and get back home late, and they would also return home late from school and tired.
“This was something I had never seen in a house setting, a man taking up that role. It was a big shift in my thinking as well, as a young man, I was like, ‘oh this is actually right, this can happen,’ and it does not have to be as society says it happens,” he added.
He further explained that despite him being married, he also picks up these roles in his house without feeling that he is being emasculated as a man.
