The Esko founder, DJ Crème de la Crème has revealed how being new in Nairobi was confusing for him.
Narrating his experience which happened a while ago, Crème was so green that he didn’t even know the basics of Nairobi.
Crème first made his way to Nairobi for greener pastures like most of us did, fresh from his native Kericho where he currently makes his living.
“One major thing that I never understood was the matatu concept,” he explains
He never understood what the numbers meant because most matatus had various route numbers painted on them, but he mistakenly believed that they represented the bus fare.
Crème claims that once when he boarded a matatu with the number “nine” on it, he was too bewildered to think clearly. He said that he believed he just needed to pay nine shillings the entire time, and when the conductor beckoned for his fare.
“I was seated comfortably, wondering why the conductor was busy ignoring me with my change. I patiently waited but eventually asked out loud for my change. I had been waiting for my 41 shillings all along,” he says.
He agrees being new in Nairobi is not for the faint-hearted but requires some mental stamina.
