The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has stated that it does not have finances to conduct a run-off election in August.
Chairman Wafula Chebukati, speaking after a consultative meeting with religious leaders on Tuesday, maintained, nevertheless, that the commission is ready to oversee the general elections.
“We do not have a budget for a re-run. We are not planning for a re-run. We are planning for general elections in August. In case of any eventuality, we will deal with them when they arise,” he said.
Due to funding restrictions, he also stated that civic education has not been very broad this time around.
“As a commission, we only got the election budget this year and we have done what we can with it even though we had a deficit. However, we have two civic educators in every ward,” he remarked.
He urged stakeholders to help in whatever way they can to ensure that the IEBC fulfills its constitutional role during the August 9th elections.
Various religious organizations from Kenya, including the Hindu Council of Kenya, the National Council of Churches in Kenya, and the National Muslim Leaders Forum, among others, participated in the consultative conference.
