The primary suspect in the dual murder of a Nyamira couple in their house, Denis Ondara, 40, was detained on Friday, May 19, 2023, in Migori, according to the authorities.
Ondara was apprehended by officers disguised as hawkers after a 4-day pursuit that came to a conclusion at the Isebania border in Migori County, increasing the total number of suspects caught thus far to three.
Ondara was identified as a result of further investigation by law enforcement authorities after he was first discovered in Ruai, Nairobi County, where he is thought to have gone into hiding four days ago before fleeing to Migori.
Four additional 9mm rounds, several spanners, and other tools were discovered in Ondara’s hands when he was apprehended nuts, screw drivers and pliers all used for breaking into vehicles.
“The sleuths posing as hawkers selling the much revered mukombero roots along the border struck in one swift move and whisked the armed suspect away without firing a single shot.
“Upon searching the suspect, 14 more rounds of 9mm calibre were recovered, assorted spanners, nuts, screw drivers and pliers all used for breaking into parked vehicles,” part of DCI statement reads.
According to detectives, the suspect is also suspected of being responsible for a number of violent robberies and murders that have been reported in the counties of Nairobi, Nyamira, Kisii, and Migori.
After failing to show up for breakfast by 10am on March 21, 2023, the couple, Edward Morema Nyangechi, 62, and Grace Mong’ina Morema, 58, who both lived in the US, were found killed in the home.
According to the initial report submitted to the Gesima Police Station, their housekeeper Silvia Barongo, 19, raised the alarm first, alerting the farmhand Jeremiah Bosire, 30, and together they drew the attention of other villages. Silvia was the first to become suspicious, according to the report.
The quick-reacting villains searched and discovered the woman’s dead body lying in a pool on a bed of blood in one of the bedrooms, while the man’s body was found in the garage.
The bodies bore deep cuts on their heads while their legs and hands were tied together using electric cables.
“An autopsy report released later by the government pathologist indicated that the two died as a result of strangulations and blunt object injuries on their heads and upper limbs,” the statement added.
