The consignment of 12 sacks of marijuana was intercepted by police while being transported to Kisumu in a hearse.
Busia County police commander Maxwell Nyaema said the van, branded Rafiki Funeral Services-Othaya, was flagged down for a routine traffic check but as the driver lowered his window, a police officer detected a strange smell.
“The heavily tinted vehicle whose stereo was playing sombre tunes associated with escorting the departed, pulled over,” police added.
A search was mounted and 12 sacks of bhang were found in the vehicle.
“His fears were confirmed moments later when after conducting a search inside the vehicle together with his colleagues, they discovered 12 sacks of cannabis sativa arranged on the seats and floor of the van,” police said.
Hussein Otita, the hearse’s driver, was taken into custody, and the car was seized.
