On Saturday, detectives retrieved 22 more dead from mass graves located on property connected to cult leader Paul Mackenzie in Shakahola Forest, Kilifi County.
After reportedly persuading members of his Good News International Church to starve to death in order to meet Jesus, Mr. Mackenzie is being investigated for offenses including aiding suicide.
In the course of investigations and a court fight to determine what occurred in Shakahola, the cult leader and dozens of individuals have been detained.
By Saturday, one more suspect had been detained, bringing the total to 26, according to Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, who provided updates during a news briefing.
Ms. Onyancha also stated that no rescues were carried out on Saturday and that there were now 610 individuals listed as missing, an increase of one since Friday.
She added that 93 DNA samples had been gathered and that 14 victims had been reconnected with their families.
Ms. Onyancha further stated that in order to reorganize the logistical support, the exhumations had been postponed by two days, or until Tuesday, May 16.
However, the search and rescue effort continues.
