Shortly after returning from a trip to the United Arab Emirates, Somalia’s new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced on Friday that he is isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

“So far, I have no symptoms but I will continue to self-isolate and serve the people of Somalia from home,” he said on Twitter.

“I ask we all keep each other safe by following public health advice and guidelines.”

The 66-year-old president came back from his first official trip overseas since his election on May 15—the United Arab Emirates—on Friday.

Former scholar and peace activist Mohamud served as president from 2012 to 2017, however his first term was marred by allegations of corruption and internal strife.

According to the World Health Organization, the turbulent country in the Horn of Africa has reported 26,748 coronavirus infections, 1,361 of which have been fatal.
