Kiambu politician suspected to have brutally murdered her husband George Mwangi was yesterday released on a Sh1 million bond. Gladys Chania alongside her co-accused Morris Kamau Mbugua appeared before Kiambu Resident Magistrate Wilson Rad in who declined an appeal by the prosecution to detain her for seven more days to complete investigations.

The magistrate ordered that the accused be released on bail as detectives’ firm up their investigations. Chania has been detained at Gigiri police station for the past seven days after she was arraigned on Monday last week and the prosecution was allowed to hold her for seven days.

She is scheduled to enter a plea the following Monday, and the prosecution anticipates calling her co-accused as a witness.

According to a post-mortem report by government pathologist Johnston Oduores, the late Mwangi passed away after being struck in the back of the skull with a hard instrument.

His torso also had cuts on his hands, showing that he had made futile attempts to fight off his assailants.

Chania, who ran unsuccessfully for the position of Kiambu Woman Representative in the August elections, was detained two weeks ago in connection with her 58-year-old husband’s grisly murder.

Detectives think that there was a love triangle when they discovered his burned remains abandoned at Kieni Forest. Chania is accused of planning the brutal murder of their three children’s father after learning that he had an intimate relationship with another woman.
