A primary school head teacher in Homa Bay town constituency is on the spot for allegedly subjecting a nine-year-old girl to child labour.
Kuja Primary School head teacher Humphrey Muturi was arrested Wednesday over accusations of deterring the girl from going to school by making her work for him as a househelp.
It is said that the girl was moved from a primary school in Migori county in May last year when she was in Class Two and was to be admitted at Kuja Primary School.
However, authorities revealed that the minor was instead tasked with the responsibility of taking care of the head teachers’ one-year-old baby at his residential house in Rodi Kopany Township.
Homa Bay Children’s Officer Joseph Otieno said they liaised with officers from Rodi Police Station in a raid of teacher’s house before they arrested him on Wednesday.
Carrying teacher’s baby
Speaking to the press yesterday, Otieno said they found the girl carrying the head teacher’s baby and upon interrogating her it was discovered that she has not been going to school since May last year.
“The matter is being treated as exposing the girl to child labour. We have discovered that the minor has been taking care of the baby in the teacher’s residence at a time she is supposed to go school,” Otieno said.
