USD 439 trillion? Kenyans poke holes in DCI mega fraud bust

Published

on

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have declared that they had taken eight people into custody in connection with a massive scam that is supposedly worth USD 439 trillion and targets two Dutch foreign businesspeople.

The businesspeople were duped into thinking they had a consignment of 40 pallets totaling USD 4 billion stuck at the Kenya Customs Warehouse by the accused, who were pretending to be customs agents, according to the DCI.

The pallets were scheduled to be flown to Dubai, but they insisted on a USD 36,000 duty fee in order to be released.

Acting on a tip, DCI agents rushed the warehouse as the businessmen arrived to pay the price, apprehending the eight suspects.

But Kenyans on X, the former Twitter platform, were skeptical of the astounding 439 trillion dollar amount, with many asking questions on the accuracy of the entire report.

A user @TonyAlexIrungu pointed out that the US economy is valued at USD 26.950 trillion, making the alleged USD 439 trillion figure seem unrealistic.

David Ndii, the chairperson of President William Ruto’s Council of Economic Affairs, echoed the same sentiment, questioning how the amount could be 220 times the total USD in circulation, which is estimated to be around USD 2 trillion.

Other users @AdamMaina_ and @simon_aspireke drew attention to the discrepancy between the alleged amount and the fact that such a vast sum of money has never been known to exist.

@kachwanya further highlights the absurdity of the figure, comparing it to the total world economy, which is estimated to be around USD 100 trillion.

The Dutch businesses who were the target of the scam stated to the DCI that they gave the figure and that it astonished them as well. However, the DCI is still looking into the matter and will update the public as more information becomes available.

Along with the arrests, DCI detectives found multiple boxes hidden with counterfeit US dollars, military boots, customs reflector jackets, military fatigues that were allegedly taken from Administration Police Service (APS) officers, and other items.

To ascertain the entire scope of the fraud and the origin of the counterfeit money, investigations are still underway.

Khaligraph Jones faces critics head on after His Huge House causes online banter

Published

on

Rapper Khaligraph Jones, has hit back at some of the people criticising his expansive house under construction.

His huge house has been the subject of online discussion with some critics saying it looked like a government structure.

Others have equated it to a level 4 hospital somewhere in the rural areas.

Khaligraph, whose real name is Brian Omollo, has put in great strides in building a house for himself and his family, something that has earned him plaudits from fans and admirers, yet there are those who feel he should have done a better one.

But the rapper has aseemingly laughed off his critics, saying they are yet to see the real thing.

In a social media post, the rapper said he is working hard to make sure his house is complete, and that critics should brace themselves for more.

He wondered why some people could be offended by his progress.

“Wacha nitafute pesa nimalize nyumba. Sikujua mjengo unaeza patia watu wengine content. Nitawachokesha sana lol (Let me get more money to complete the construction. I didn’t know some people could be making content from a construction. I will tire you, lol),” Khaligraph said.

Omollo, as he is also known, is a hugely successful rapper not only in Kenya but also in Africa, and has made his money through music and endorsements.

The rapper occasionally kept fans updated on the progress of the two-storey building since he started construction.

On Thursday, March 16, Khaligraph posted a photo outside the house alongside his manager Frank. The majestic mansion was seen in the background. It featured a modern, flat roof design quickly gaining popularity in Kenya.

The windows and walling were completed, awaiting finishing touches to the exterior. The front entrance of Khaligraph’s mansion features two majestic pillars leading to the doorway. Next to the door is a towering glass and concrete column, allowing lots of light into the house.

The image also showed that Khaligraph had started working on landscaping his house. Lush green grass and a tree were spotted on the front lawn. Another image captured outside the house showed that a concrete wall surrounded it. The compound is accessed through a modern black gate.

Previously speaking about the project, Khaligraph said it served as a lesson to artistes on the value of having an investment. “I’m building a home to show other musicians that it’s good to invest because, with this industry, things can change.” On why he was building it slowly, Khaligraph said: ” I don’t have all that money, but mimi sijengi nyumba za ufala, najenga nyumba noma. It’s massive with many bedrooms.

While commenting on an X (formerly Twitter) thread which asked, “Thoughts on Kaligraph Jones’ house?” one user said that the house reminded them of a Level 4 hospital in Kisii County. Another user said that the house looked more like an Amazon warehouse while another compared it to a silo.

Popular X influencer @5people even got a little mean saying, “Ati Khaligraph ameamua kujenga nyumba inakaa Zetech College juu hakuenda campus (laugh emojis)”

On his part, user @keam254 got a little witty writing, “Khaligraph jones badala ya kujenga  nyumba, aliamua kujenga hospitali level 4 ya ku-nurse his sick lines!”

Many people, however, have lauded the publicity-shy rapper for the tremendous step, congratulating him for achieving so much in so little years.

“Mnakuwanga advocates for people doing what they want with their money but Khaligraph akijenga nyumba haitick cool kid boxes ndo mnadraw the line! This is a young man showing young Kenyans how it’s done! And you’re here trying to troll such a success story!” X user @Kabue_Muriithi said.

The ‘Tuma Kitu’ rapper started building his super mansion in February last year.

His wife Georgina Muteti took to social media on February 7, 2022, and posted photos showing workers digging the foundation for their house.

Speaking during an interview in November 2022, Khaligraph said he was building a huge mansion to show his success.

“I show my successes because it’s something that wasn’t shown by guys who were here before us,” Khaligraph said.

“I’m building a home to show other musicians that it’s good to invest because, with this industry, things can change, but if you have a place to call home where you don’t pay rent, it’s safe for the family,” he added.
