Senegalese President Macky Sall stated on Monday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has sought to speak to the African Union.
Sall, the present AU chairman, stated that he and Zelenksy spoke on the phone about the economic consequences of the Ukrainian crisis and “the need to favor dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict”.
According to Sall, the Ukrainian president has also requested to speak to the AU.
The plea emerges as Africa grapples with how to respond to Russia’s attack of Ukraine.
For instance, 58 states voted no in a UN General Assembly decision on April 7 to expel Russia from the UN Human Rights Council over its invasion.
Senegal was one of 24 African countries that abstained from voting. A total of nine African countries voted in favor of the proposal, while nine others voted against it.
