Ultra sound machine goes missing in Voi Moi County Referral Hospital

Published

A modern ultra sound machine that the Kenya Red Cross had given to the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi in order to improve the delivery of maternal health care has gone missing.

Even as concerns about the safety of additional costly medical equipment in local healthcare facilities are raised, health officials claim they have no idea where it might be.

The costly piece of medical equipment’s make and serial number are unknown to County Executive for Health Services Gifton Mkaya as it was not listed in the hospital asset inventory.

“We don’t know where the ultrasound machine is. It was not amongst the items included in the handing over report,” he explained.

Mkaya revealed this startling admission during questioning from the County Assembly Committee on Health, a meeting intended to urgently tackle difficult issues impacting the health system.

The committee’s chair, Mr. Duncan Wangama, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for the Wusi-Kishamba Ward, revealed that they had gotten trustworthy information indicating the ultrasonic machine’s whereabouts was still unknown.

He said that specifics about the ultrasound had to be provided to the committee by department of health officials.

“We need to know the cost, model and serial number of this machine so that we can speak from a point of knowledge,” said the chair. However, the committee was shocked when the county executive admitted that he could not provide those details because he had no idea where the machine was.

He however said that the matter had been reported to the police for proper investigations. When pressed on the status of the investigations, Mkaya admitted that he has not followed up the matter, attracting chastisement from the committee members.

“You never bothered to follow up with the report. What you said is neither here nor there because it is vague. We need tangible reports and statements to work on,” said Mr. Lawrence Mzugha, Mbololo MCA and the Deputy Majority Leader

MPs decry delay of Mt Kenya projects

Published

Two Members of the Parliament from the Mt Kenya region have raised concern over the delay in the completion of the Mau Mau link road.

Kangema MP Peter Kihungi and his Juja counterpart George Koimburi on Sunday asked Treasury to release funds for the completion of the road that links Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri and Nyandarua counties.

They said that in the recent supplementary budget, the amount allocated to the road was slashed from Sh280 million to Sh175 million.

They said the Jubilee administration had allocated the project Sh4.5 billion and substantial work had been done on the ground. Kihungi said road is of immense economic importance to the local community and the country. “Residents are very much concerned about the progress of the road.

The construction during the previous government was going on well and we are worried since in the current budget Sh280 million was allocated but when it came to the supplementary budget the money was cut by more than half to Sh175 million which can hardly do much,” said Kihungi. Koimburi (pictured) said they promised their people that the Mau Mau Road would be completed once the Kenya Kwanza government assumed office.

“We want to ask the Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure money is allocated for roads being done in Mt Kenya. Residents are eagerly waiting for completion of these roads which are expected to spur the local economy,” he said

Sixty-five kg of explosives in transit were found by police in Migori County; they are thought to have originated in neighboring Tanzania.

Two foreigners were caught by Migori County Police Commander Francis Nguli and his crew carrying 25 cartons of banned explosives, which are estimated to be worth Sh9.3 million.

Nguli stated at the Migori police station that the explosives were probably intended for use in illicit mining.

He continued by saying that it was thought the suspects had entered the nation illegally and were transferring the materials without the Ministry of Mining’s license paperwork.
