Deputy President William Ruto says he has settled on Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate because he is an astute debater, a principled and fearless fighter who has stood by him for a long time.

Ruto also said after a 17-hour meeting, Kenya Kwanza Alliance, tht he picked Gachagua because he is a principled, because he is a fighter for the right cause.

The announcement brought  to an end months of heightened anxiety and speculation over his deputy choice.

Ruto said he will sign an executive order immediately after he gets into the office that will outline the roles of the deputy president.

“The DP under Kenya Kwanza will perform real duty as assigned to him by the president,” he said.

“My deputy and I have agreed when it is time to leave we will leave and we will mentor other leaders in Kenya Kwanza formation,” he said.

Gachagua is a UDA member who has also been central in Ruto’s behind-the-scenes political negotiations with partners. He has been a fierce defender of DP Ruto and UDA party.

There was intense speculation about Ruto’s running mate, but the DP has been holding his cards close to his chest to avoid any premature disclosure that would hurt his allies.

Some of the names that had initially been fronted included Tharaka Nithi senator Kithure Kindiki, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi and Gachagua.

The number was later narrowed down to Gachagua and Kindiki.

Gachagua said in accepting the nomination. “This is the biggest day in my life and I truly thank you our Deputy President for the trust and confidence you have bestowed in me.”
