Viral Somali sprinter named ‘slowest ever’ has responded after being criticized for performing dismally in the university games competition in the city of Chengdu in China.
The Somalia runner Nasra Abukar Ali said in a statement that she was slow because she was injured.
She said: “Somalis do not deserve to be represented in a running competition, I ran with a sprained leg, but I am criticized.”
Ms Ali took close to 22 seconds to complete the race – almost twice as long as the winner.
People online wondered why Somalia would send such a slow person to represent the country in the running competition.
In the video that has gone viral online, Ms Ali doesn’t appear to be fit and as soon as the buzzer rings, the crouching athletes race ahead, leaving her far behind.
She is soon left out of the shot and eventually completes the race with a jovial skip.
She has been labelled the ‘slowest-ever’ in international competition.
Consequently, Somalia’s Sports Minister has suspended its Athletics boss after this saga.
The snail-paced potbellied athlete is a niece of the athletics chief.
The announcement came after it was widely questioned how and why Nasra Abukar Ali, 20, came to compete in the FISU 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China
