Rueben Kagame, a former presidential candidate, responded to Meg Whitman’s assertion that Kenya’s August 2022 elections were free and fair.
He said on Twitter that the 2022 presidential elections were not at all free and fair.
“I want to tell the whole world including the United States and President William Ruto that the 2022 Kenya elections were not free and fair at all. You can wish and pretend they were, but you know the truth and by the way, it’s not about Azimio 2022 losing,” his tweet read.
Whitman described the general elections of the previous year as free and fair while speaking at the devolution meeting.
Whitman’s comments drew a range of responses; some agreed with her assessment that the elections were free and fair, while others didn’t.
The elections held last year, according to the ambassador, were the most trustworthy ever held in the nation.
“I arrived in Kenya days before the general election, and what I witnessed was short of remarkable.
“The election was observed by local and international election organisations and the results were upheld by the Kenyan Supreme Court and power was transferred orderly and peacefully at the time,” she said.
Azimio Chief Raila Odinga called out the ambassador saying she was meddling in Kenya’s political affairs.
